Founded in the late 1970s, The N.T. General Store on Darwin’s Cavenagh Street is something of an institution. It has survived cyclone, fire and flood and its bright yellow and red facade is the doorway to a veritable treasure trove of camping and outdoor gear.
The N.T. General Store was set up by a group of Darwin locals initially to sell army disposals, but some fifty years later, it sells just about everything that outdoor, camping and travel enthusiasts could want – all with an inimitable frontier-style.
The store is still owned by locals who work on the shopfloor. The hand-picked staff pride themselves on offering great advice and friendly customer service and as the gear sells itself, there’s no ‘hard sell’ at the door. Instead customers are welcomed in to browse and enjoy the store. Iconic, quirky and packed to the rafters with great quality products, the store attracts locals and visitors from out-of-town in equal measure.
